Microsoft's big step for VOIP

Microsoft has announced that 2,500 companies would be given the privilege of testing Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 using which customers can make VoIP calls directly through applications within the Microsoft Office suite.

Outlook users like me can click on a contact and initiate a phone call. With this type of functionality, the entire process of scheduling and conducting conferences can be streamlined without the help of third-party products.

Cisco and Avaya, who have invested a fair amount of money and effort in doing the above, now have serious competition. And knowing Microsoft, the pricing of this VOIP service will be very attractive.

You could fill an entire whiteboard with how the triad: Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo - play their chinese checkers. There will be more news on this front soon.
