What that means is for every computer sold, every broadband connection sold, and going forward for every cellphone sold, there is an ongoing need for anti-virus and anti-abuse software.
Now while almost everyone is able to buy a computer and load it with anti-virus software, the problems start once the computer is attacked and when the anti-virus software would give out a variety of notices and action items. Most non-technical users are not confident to understand and proceed in the right direction. Clearly, there is a need for 'after-sales or maintenance service' with these products, because they get quite technical once they actually start their defensive work.
Last week, I saw this gap getting filled when someone distributed a flyer for 'repairing the and weekly/monthly health monitoring of the computer'. It quoted some facts from the same BBC test, and offered security service at just £5/month, or £50/yr - the service clearly targetted families with kids surfing the web, and older people. Hope Symantec and McAfee are tuned into this trend. Meanwhile, I need to speak with this creative person. More updates sometime later.
